The International Astronomical Union (IAU), the governing body of world astronomy, has launched 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009, for its acronym in English) under the slogan: "The Universe, Yours to Discover" .
The IYA2009 will celebrate the fourth centenary of the first astronomical observation made through an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei. It will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society, science and culture, with a strong emphasis on education, through the solemn commitment of all people with children and young people, to hold events at national, regional and global Throughout the year 2009.
